Another epic work from Beebe showcasing the luxury train cars of the day and the personages who rode them. (He himself owned two so he was the perfect author for this.) Illustrated throughout with black and white photos and schematic diagrams of the cars. Tipped in full color frontispiece of The Virginia City, one of Beebe’s cars, done up in a style described as “Venetian Renaissance baroque.” With Appendix of Pullman business & private cars built at Pullman 1882 through 1930 as well as a list of private cars handled by the Florida East Coast Railway in 1894. 382 pages.

This is not a pictorial (although there are some black and white photos), it is a roster of all the streamlined cars built by ACF, the St. Louis Car Co., Railroad Shops, and other builders. (Pullman Standard and Budd cars are covered in the two earlier volumes.) The roster is organized by the railroad that bought the cars, followed by a detailed car list (by manufacturer) of what happened to each car. An amazing labor of love by the author and his collaborators. 140 pages.

Ranging from the 20th Century, Merchants Limited, Florida Special, North Western Limited, Route of the Rockets, North Coast Limited, and The Overland Limited, among many others are described in detail. The book is in used condition with an edge worn jacket.

Fascinating look at the regular passenger equipment that was used by the majority of railroads to transport the majority of their passengers. The author describes the evolution of the basic coach car from the days of airless boxes with benches or rattan seating to the era of plush recliners with air-conditioning. The book discusses every aspect of these trains, from their position in the consist to the design of the superb all-coach trains such as The Blue Comet, the Reading’s Crusader, and the NYC’s Pacemaker. Locals are alos covered, as are commuter, milk, mail, ski, rail fan and express trains, the Auto-Train, and Amtrak. There is a chapter each on the Algoma Central to Agawa Canyon and Ontario Northland’s Polar Bear. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos showing interiors and exteriors of the trains. 192 pages with index.
