Valuable as these volumes are in relation to railroad operations in Nevada and California, their usefulness as authoritative reference sources embraces a much broader scope. Railroads of Nevada and Eastern California is as much a history of the region as it is a study of the railroads. The principal mines and mills and their production are scrupulously detailed, together with the personalities who created them.

A map has been provided in Volume I to orient the reader to the locales described. It is an accurate and reliable travel aid for readers who choose to wander the region’s historic railroad routes. In this volume, Myrick begins his history with coverage of the sprawling network of the northern railroads.

The setting for Volume II is the varied and spectacular geography of southern Nevada and eastern California—from Death Valley and the Mojave Desert to the hard rock tunnels of Goldfield and the isolated communities of Rhyolite and Pioche. This volume also contains a handy index and an updated locomotive roster.

History of the San Luis Southern Railway, a 31 mile shortline between Jaroso and Blanca, Colorado. Built by engineer Louis Blauvelt of “Moffat Route” fame in 1909, the little railroad was intended to serve the farms and industries of the valley. Lack of rainfall crippled agriculture in the area and the railroad struggled for most of its life. This book explores the construction, operation and obstacles it faced. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos. With schematic drawings of equipment and structures, bibliography, and index. 190 pages.

Author Nimke worked for the Rutland and has authored this privately published softbound book on Rutland’s successor. It has 180 pages, 250 B&W images, and covers the Green Mountain RR from inception to 1984. The binding is sound, there is no jacket, and it has minimal shelf wear.
