Subsidiary Companies of Southern Pacific

Southern Pacific and its predecessor and subsidiary companies were more than just a rail carriers of freight and merchandise.  Over the one hundred and forty-three years that Southern Pacific existed into its merger into Union Pacific, many rail and non-rail companies were purchased and created to operate under the Southern Pacific umbrella.  Some of the more significant corporate entities that Southern Pacific owned, operated, or controlled were ferry lines in the San Francisco Bay and New Orleans areas, a communications company, a property management company, an industrial development company, pipeline companies for the transportation of various oil based commodities and coal slurry, as well as a number of different railroad companies.  Listed below are many of these companies.
