Southern Pacific and its predecessor and subsidiary companies were more than just a rail carriers of freight and merchandise. Over the one hundred and forty-three years that Southern Pacific existed into its merger into Union Pacific, many rail and non-rail companies were purchased and created to operate under the Southern Pacific umbrella.
